Before Andrew Johns became a Newcastle Knights immortal, Matthew Rodwell was the man steering the club towards its first taste of finals football. Nicknamed “Rocket”, Rodwell enjoyed a remarkable 1992 season, earning the Dally M Rookie of the Year award and establishing himself as one of rugby league’s most exciting young talents.
From appearing alongside Tina Turner in one of rugby league’s most memorable commercials, to signing with Super League’s Western Reds, Rodwell’s career took him across the country and around the world. He would later represent the St George Dragons and Penrith Panthers before an overseas adventure with Warrington that proved a challenging chapter.
In this episode, Matthew reflects on the highs, the challenges and the unforgettable moments from a career that helped shape the early years of the Newcastle Knights and the game of rugby league.
